3 interesting/adventurous live music events this week in LA that I recommend
Fan of interesting & adventurous left-field live music? Well, here’s 3 fantastic shows tonight, tomorrow, & Thursday that I HIGHLY recommend!
Tonight (Tuesday Nov 19th): at LA’s most curious & musically adventurous venue 2220 Arts & Archives; one of today's most acclaimed guitarist/composer/improvisers, Wendy Eisenberg, will be playing in a trio. Wendy released two albums this year that I really loved. First, earlier this year; a collab album with Caroline Davis, called Accept When. Which has been one of my favorite left-field jazz albums this year. A couple weeks ago, she also released Viewfinder. Also a fantastic record. Tonight opening for Wendy Eisenberg’s trio is Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, in duo with Gregory Uhlmann; whom has played in bands with a lot of LA’s greatest experimental improvisers; Jeremiah Chiu, Anna Butterss, Josh Johnson, Dustin Wong, Sam Wilkes. Also opening are contemplative drones from the trio of Liv Mershon, Pauline Lay and John Dawson.
Tomorrow (Wednesday Nov 20th): Back at 2220; a night with ambient composer Laurel Halo on piano and live electronics performing her dreamlike work, Atlas in a duo with cellist Leila Bordreuil. Expect really beautiful lush ambient jazz. I also highly recommend Halo’s 2023 album. Was one of my favorite ambient releases last year.
Thursday Nov 21st: Mount Eerie released a new album Night Palace; which will easily be on my top 10 releases of 2024. In Night Palace; Phil Elverum, the man behind Mount Eerie, is back to his roots of his original iteration The Microphones; whose 2001 album The Glow Pt 2 is heralded as a lo-fi classic. In Night Palace we get a return to the beloved deep analog fuzz from Glow Pt 2. Phil is playing Thursday at the Bellwether in DTLA. I’ve seen him live a dozen times, and can’t recommend enough!
